Top Tips for a Newbie at the Gym
Going to the gym is a popular New Year’s resolution, and it’s one that most people struggle with. Whether your new goal for 2020 is toning up, losing weight, or running a marathon, going to the gym is a great way to achieve your fitness targets in the most effective way. If you’re a new gym goer and need some advice to get started, then read on as we’ve compiled what we consider to be key tips for getting settled at a new gym.
- Make use of your induction
As a new starter at the gym, you’ve signed the forms , bought a brand new kit and you’re keen to get started. However, an induction is a great opportunity to get to know the trainers, ask for their advice and find out what machines and weights your gym has on offer. Use this free one to one time with a gym professional to ask them any questions you have. Let them know what you want to achieve and they can give you advice on how to do so.
- Have a goal
Before signing up to the gym, you have to know what is it that you want to achieve. If you want to become stronger or just want to be able to do 20 press ups without stopping, you can tailor your workouts to make sure you hit your target and reach better results each time. Having a goal to work towards will not only keep you committed to your new gym membership, but will determine how your workouts are structured.
- Arrive with a plan
Joining a gym can be quite daunting. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed by the big machines and heavy weights, leaving you not knowing where to start. The key is to arrive at the gym with a plan. There are great workout DVD’s or even YouTube videos that you can follow. To get started, get to know the different machines and use the ones that make you feel comfortable and confident. Listen to an upbeat playlist and switch off from the outside world.
- Keep a gym diary
To keep track of your progress and the best way to know where you’re at is keeping a diary to record your sessions. Think about your body and how it responds to your workouts. Write down your workouts, timings and how you are feeling by the end. That way you can look back and figure out what made you feel great or sore – use this information to get better. For example, if you want to be able to run 5k without stopping, write down how long it takes you to reach 5k, and eventually your time will decrease. Not only giving you motivation for your next run, but to know how long it would take you to reach that target.
- Rest
Even the most experienced of athletes appreciate the importance of a rest after a hard workout. At the gym, you’ll be putting your body through different exercises that it’s not used to. Make sure you have at least one rest day a week and try to get eight hours of sleep each night.
