Christmas 2016 in London

In just a few days advent calendar doors will be opened, Christmas trees and twinkling lights will start appearing, and the Christmas shopping panic will be well on its way. We’ve rounded up some of the best Christmas events in London to take the stress off and enjoy the festivities this December:

Be dazzled by divine decorations

Head to Oxford Street for Christmas shopping and gaze at some of the most famous Christmas lights in the country. 2016 is the 57th year the iconic road has been decorated for the festive period, and this year features 1778 snowball decorations, using a whopping 750,000 LED light bulbs! If you are looking for some more central London sparkle, then the grand shopping stretch that is Regent Street is the place to be. This year it has been flooded with spectacular garlands of light, and is a throwback to Regent Street’s first ever Christmas lights which lit up London in 1954.

Say hello to Santa and shop ‘til you drop

If it is some gift inspiration you are after or something unique to surprise your loved ones with this year, then London’s Christmas markets are the perfect place! Leicester Square is currently London’s largest Christmas destination, featuring a traditional Christmas market, Santa’s grotto, and a vintage Spiegeltent with a packed programme of classic Christmas shows.

The Tate Modern is home to a traditional Christmas market; browse handmade toys, unique jewellery, intricate decorations and much more. Or for a cute collection of gifts, crafts and food stalls, then take a trip Southbank Centre’s Christmas market.

Warm up at Winter Wonderland

A festive favourite for all the family has returned to Hyde Park for its tenth year, Winter Wonderland is the perfect place to get into the Christmas spirit. Featuring fairground rides, Santa Land, Zippo’s Christmas Circus, the biggest outdoor ice rink in the UK, and a selection of Christmas themed bars and stalls.

Skate away the shopping stress

As well as Winter Wonderland, many places across London offer outdoor ice skating during the festive season. One of the most enchanting skating locations is the Natural History Museum, with the museum’s buildings as a stunning backdrop, surrounded by sparkling trees, and a majestic Christmas tree in the middle of the ice.

Alternatively, make the most of the Tower of London’s grand historical setting for your seasonal skating sessions, where you can enjoy stunning views of London’s ancient fortress, and stop in for a drink in the Tower’s temporary ice bar.

Feast on Festive Afternoon Tea

Relax during your festive day in the city, with a delicious meal in the Rembrandt Hotel. Just across the road from the Natural History Museum, and less than 1 mile from Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland, it is the perfect location to rest your feet and enjoy a bite to eat by the fireplace. From the 1st December, The Rembrandt will be serving Christmas Afternoon Tea in the 1606 Lounge Bar for just £19.95 per person, or warm up with mulled wine and a mince pie for just £4.95.
